Education and Science Days at Kings Island

We all know the height, speed, length and the effects of Kings Island’s tallest and fastest roller coaster, Orion, but what kind of science, math and logistics go into designing a ride of that magnitude?
Today was Engineering Day at Kings Island where students had an opportunity to hear from Andre Beck, mechanical engineer from Swiss-based Bolliger & Mabillard, the designer of Orion.
Beck spoke to students about the design of the trains and ride elements including the lift hill, the 300-foot first drop at an 85-degree angle, the motor, braking system, the 178-foot-tall wave turn, 202-foot sharp-banked turnaround, high-speed camelback, second camelback, high-banked belt and s-curve.
