How LaRosa’s became a Kings Island tradition

Did you know that Kings Island was the first park in the theme park industry to sell pizza? It’s true!

Prior to the opening of Kings Island in 1972, no other theme park had done it. Hot dogs, hamburgers, fried chicken and other finger food were essentially the only dining options for guests.

So how did Kings Island become the first? Well, when Kings Island was under construction, there were a couple open spots on International Street and the park didn’t have the money to fill them internally. So, Gregg Pancero and his father, Jack, offered to take one of the spots and chose to make pizza.

Operating as La Fiera Pizzeria, they bought the dough, sauce, cheese and toppings from Buddy LaRosa, who at the time had a few LaRosa’s Pizzeria locations in Cincinnati.

Pizza immediately became the most popular food item in the park, leading to a second location opening for Kings Island's second season in 1973 and launching an industry-wide culinary trend.

The two locations at Kings Island went on to become official LaRosa’s Pizzeria franchises.

As Kings Island celebrates its 50th anniversary season, a slice of LaRosa's pizza is as much a tradition for guests as a ride on The Beast.
