Appearing 20 million years before its better known North American cousin, Huayangosaurus is one of the smallest stegosaurids found to date. The double rows of plates that rise from its back are more spike-like than Stegosaurus and its skull broader. Curiously, the front of the jaw contains premaxillary teeth which were not present in latter stegosaurus.
