Ceratopsians, or “horned face” dinosaurs, likely originated in Asia during the earlier Jurassic Period but evolved and flourished in the Cretaceous. The variety and diversity of head ornamentation was evident in the many species of ceratopsians Within the Styracosaurus species itself the spikes, knobs and projections varied from individual to individual and were a feature in courtship and other social behaviors.

While potentially useful in both interspecies combat and protection against predators, the spikes were most likely used in striking an opponent’s body rather than in head to head combat.
