On this date in 2016, after 10 weeks of in-park clues and social media teasing, Kings Island revealed its plans to build a new wooden roller coaster: Mystic Timbers.

Kings Island fans and roller coaster enthusiasts alike, curious as to what park officials would reveal, began to queue up in the Rivertown-themed area of Kings Island four hours before the announcement.

In the weeks and days leading up to the announcement, nobody was certain what was going down in the woods in Rivertown. Speculation was all over the map ranging from a new roller coaster, dark ride, or since the announcement was being held in the very spot where the retired Kenton’s Cove Keelboat Canal once stood, a new log flume.

Shortly after 10 p.m., the wait was finally over and Kings Island revealed to a loud chorus of cheers its plans to build Mystic Timbers.

Designed by Pennsylvania-based Great Coasters International Inc., Mystic Timbers, which was voted “Best New Ride” in 2017 by the industry trade publication Amusement Today, is themed to an abandoned lumber company becoming overrun by a mysterious medusa-like overgrowth of vines as nature reclaims its land.

Riders on Mystic Timbers traverse 16 airtime moments through wooded terrain, over water and a mid-course tunnel along a 3,265-foot long track at speeds up to 53 mph.

Watch the video below to see how Mystic Timbers was revealed to the world on this date in 2016.
