This Date in 2008: KIngs Island announces Diamondback
August 6, 2020On this date 12 years ago (Aug. 6, 2008), one of the biggest and most exciting announcements in Kings Island’s history took place when the park revealed its plans to build a brand-new roller coaster to open in 2009, Diamondback.
Designed exclusively for Kings Island by the Switzerland-based Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M), Diamondback stands 230 feet at its highest point with a first drop of 215 feet at a 74-degree angle. Riders snake their way around 5,282 feet of steel track at speeds up to 80 mph. Overall, the ride features 10 vertical drops and two helixes, and a splashdown ending.
The trains on Diamondback feature unique, open-air stadium style seating that allows rides to experience an unobstructed view of all the thrills and excitement on one of the top ranked steel roller coasters in the world in annual industry and enthusiast polls.
Diamondback was the first new capital project I was involved in as a member of the Kings Island marketing team, which included suggesting the name. Because it was my first new capital press event, this day will always rank as one of the most memorable moments of my Kings Island career.
Because it was my first major project, the press event will always rank as one of the most memorable moments of my years at the park.
The video below shows how Diamondback was introduced to guests and news media attending the press event held at the park and to television and social media audiences.
