Readers’ Mailbag: Does Coasterstock always sell out, Gold Pass Ride Nights, What's happening in 2020 and more!

April was a rainy month but it’s given way to May, where the flowers and leaves on the trees have bloomed because of the water provided to them and it’s made the park look absolutely beautiful this spring.

As usual, we received some great and interesting questions from our readers for this week's Reader's Mailbag:

No Passholders’ late night rides this year? Much better than ERT so why not? Love KI. – Andrew D., Madison, IN

This year we’re doing something a little different and having one larger night time exclusive event for Gold and Platinum Season Passholders on May 31. The Season Passholder Celebration will feature extended ride time from 10 p.m. until midnight on Banshee, Delirum, The Bat, Drop Tower and Viking Fury. Passholders will experience an elevated in-park atmosphere featuring a live DJ spinning the hottest hits all night long.

What’s happening in 2020? – Gary S., Cincinnati, OH

2020 will be a leap year starting on the Wednesday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2020th year of the Common Era and Anno Domini designations and the 20th year of the third millennium, the 20th year of the 21st century and the first year of the 2020s decade. It’s also an Olympic year with the 2020 Summer Olympics being held July 24-August 9 in Tokyo, Japan and the 30th anniversary of my 10,000th ride on The Racer.

I’m bummed. My boyfriend and I wanted to attend Coasterstock but it’s sold out. Does it always sell out? – Teri C., Bellbrook, OH

Coasterstock has reached its capacity every year since the event debuted in 2015. This year was the fastest, with capacity being reached before the end of April. Should Coasterstock continue past this year, I recommend getting your tickets as soon as they go on sale so you don’t miss out.

I love all of the changes that were made this year, particularly bringing back the Glockenspiel and The Beast footprints. If I could make one suggestion, can you paint the Racer red, white and blue again? – Tony W., Milford, OH

Great to hear that you love all of hte updates that were made over the winter. Things like the Glockenspiel and Beast footprints have rekindled a lot of memories that our guests have of their visits from the 1980s and 1990s. In regards to painting the Racer back to its original colors, that project is on a long list of things that we want to do. We’re only able to check off so many things from the list each year.

Which side do you like better: The Blue Racer or Red Racer? – Pete O., Batavia, OH

That’s kind of like asking a parent which one is their favorite child. There’s something I like about each side that differentiates them from each other. Now that the Red side faces forward again, I really like coming around the turnaround at night and seeing the park lit up. That was one of my first childhood memories of the ride, so if I had to pick out one thing over the other, that would be it.

Offseason maintenance a Beast of a project for Kings Island's behind-the-scenes crews

For Kings Island’s maintenance crews and ride technicians, their busiest time of year is now underway. The process began as soon as the last rides were given on the final operating day of the regular season for all of the non-WinterFest rides and attractions with the removal of cars and transporting them to the maintenance shops where they’ll be stripped down to every last nut and bolt. Everything will be disassembled, looked at and rebuilt over the winter.

Above all else, however, this process requires patience. There is so much that can change from one year to the next; it takes time to sort through and finalize all of the adjustments taking place across the entire Park.
