A Walk in the Park at Kings Island: Survival of the Cutest

Hey everyone! Welcome back to a Walk in the Park at Kings Island! This week, I’ll be recapping Saturday which was the 25th annual JDRF One Walk at the park and some other exciting things that happened that day. I have a full week of stuff planned, such as gearing up for Grand Carnivale and getting the new Kings Island Pinterest page up and running!  Also my newest scent idea for the imaginary candle collection (seriously Kings Island, make a candle collection and you can have all my money) drumroll please… Bacon-on-a-Stick! Now I know a candle giant already did a bacon scented candle, with mixed reviews, you either hate it or love it, but here are my thoughts on how Kings Island could turn it into a hit. Add a hint of caramelized brown sugar. It’s a simple touch, but I think it would smell amazing.

Alright, getting back to reality and going back to Saturday for the JDRF One Walk. First off, it was an amazing experience, the atmosphere and energy from the crowd was great and it was really inspiring to walk with the participants and snapping pictures of the event and hearing their stories. For those who don’t know JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is a non-profit organization that funds Type 1 Diabetes research and advocates for regulation favorable to medical research, which makes it easier to market new medical devices. Their slogan for JDRF One Walk is “Walk with us to turn Type One into Type None.” It’s an amazing organization and if you want to donate or register to be a part of the next One Walk, whether it be at Kings Island or elsewhere, click this link and you can find JDRF walks near you!

On top of raising over $1 million dollars on Saturday, reality stars from shows such as Survivor, Big Brother, The Amazing Race and American Idol also come out, to donate and to participate in the walk. One of my favorite reality shows is Survivor so when I heard there would be some former survivors joining us at Kings Island, I was ecstatic. I got to meet Billy Garcia from Survivor: Cook Islands and Denise Martin from Survivor: China and I had a chance to ask them all my burning questions while we walked them up the exit ramp to The Beast for a ride. You could definitely say that I had a great day and it wasn’t even lunch time yet. Then it got better.

In case you haven’t noticed, I am an animal lover, from sharks to chickens. I went over to Snoopy’s Barnyard Friends before they opened for the day and had my heart stolen by Jaws, a beautiful silkie chicken from Honey Hill Farm. Obviously I couldn’t contain my joy while holding Jaws and as it turns out, the girl who named her loves the movie Jaws, and sharks. I promise I didn’t name her and I am now on the lookout for my shark twin.

In other news, this week has been wild, between waking up early for the Grand Carnivale photo shoot, stretching out my amusement park legs (my best day this season has been 25,991 steps!) and searching for stories far and wide, it’s been a great week.

I also got a chance to catch up with Kings Island’s horticulturist, Ivan to talk about some of the center pieces in the park. You know which ones I’m talking about, the iconic clock, the bell and Eiffel Tower and last but certainly not least the Eiffel Tower date bed. It’s always fun to interview people and just see their faces light up when they’re talking about something that they have a passion for, it never fails to put a smile on my face. That blog and video will be up soon!

Grand Carnivale is almost here and anticipation is in the air. Our office building has been decorated, and so has the conference room, needless to say I’m excited to go and experience it. Have no idea what I’m talking about? Click here. Now we can wait impatiently for next weekend together! That’s all for this week and of course if you’re a fan of animals, go over and say hi to Jaws, the silkie chicken and the rest of her furry and feathered friends at Snoopy’s Barnyard Friends! Bye y’all!

Side note: I have a few different projects in the works right now, WITP might be going from blog to vlog, at least for a few segments, fingers crossed! I am a firm believer that my voice sounds like screeching car brakes with a Southern twang so we’ll see how it all works out. Who else can’t stand the sound of their own voice on video and recordings?

The Astro-Comet: Remembering King Cobra

In 1984, Kings Island was standing room only as King Cobra made its way into the spotlight of the Adventure Village area of the park. Designed by TOGO, it was the first roller coaster in the world to be designed from the ground up as a stand-up. Other stand-up roller coasters that preceded King Cobra were sit-down models later modified to accommodate stand-up trains, so this made it truly the world’s first.
