A Walk in the Park at Kings Island: Looking at a screen

I know I’m late to this party, but I just started watching Stranger Things on Netflix. I just finished season one and I am hooked! However, I have serious commitment issues when it comes to TV shows. The worst feeling is when you’re super into a show and it maybe only lasts two seasons and then gets cancelled and you’re left with so many unanswered questions, and so many different emotions. It’s like not getting closure after you’ve ended a relationship with someone. So when it comes to TV shows, I usually wait to start watching something after about the third season. On the other hand that might be worse because with every episode and season you become more committed the more you watch.

Let it be known that I have certainly been burned in the past by TV shows, Once Upon a Time and Blood & Oil are prime examples. These shows were the only ones I ever sat down and watched live. One of my best friends and I got together every Sunday and made some kind of treat to eat while we watched Once Upon a Time. It was a serious commitment and then the main character declared she wasn’t coming back and everything just seemed to fall apart. With Blood & Oil, it got canceled before season one was even over and there were so MANY cliffhangers and so many questions that needed to be answered. Or worse yet, you watch all of How I Met Your Mother and at the end you say, “I will never get back the time that I wasted watching the last season.” Wow, I really just wrote a whole thing about my commitment and trust issues and anxiety about TV shows…Welcome back to A Walk in the Park.

So for this week since I was just talking about TV shows, I want to go through the park and find a few rides that have been featured on a TV show or movie, or even rides that are based off of movies. Buckle up because I think our first stop is The Racer. I don’t know what it is about this roller coaster but to me, The Racer just screams “America”. Not just because of the color scheme either, although that certainly helps. It was the headlining attraction when Kings Island opened in 1972 and it’s still a good coaster to this day. Of course the reason for this ride making the list is the famous “The Cincinnati Kids” episode of The Brady Bunch. However before the Brady’s made their way to Kings Island, The Partridge Family had already vacationed to the park in August of 1972. Not only did the episode, “I Left My Heart in Cincinnati” feature The Racer, it featured a few other original rides like the Grand Carousal, Monster and Race for Your Life Charlie Brown or as it was known back then Kings Mills Log Flume. I’ve been thinking about this a lot, why doesn’t Kings Island have a giant log flume?

Now it’s over to the Backlot Stunt Coaster. I know originally it was called, “Italian Job: Stunt Track” and the theming was from the movie, The Italian Job, which is a great movie. Also can we talk about how attractive Mark Wahlberg is? Moving on, so it looks like the movie theming was dropped in 2008 and it became known as the Backlot Stunt Coaster. Y’all know I love a good history lesson. While I haven’t had a chance to ride this coaster yet, it is on my list.

It’s off to our next and final attraction. The parking lot! Confused? That’s okay because the parking lot is where, in 1975, Evel Knievel successfully jumped fourteen Greyhound buses at Kings Island, clearing a record-breaking distance of 133 feet. So not only did we get Jaws and Shake, Rattle and Roll in 1975, we also got Evel Knievel breaking records. Since this was televised, I’m saying it counts! Have I missed anything?

Also nobody has guessed correctly which roller coaster was built the year I was born and no, it isn’t Flight of Fear. Here’s another hint, it’s gone through a few name changes throughout the years.

Total side note, but apparently people are crowding around X Base this week? I guess there are posters over there about rides? Talk about a cliffhanger. I don’t comment on speculation, but when I do, I blog about it.

See you all on the next one!
