April 29 is a big day in Kings Island’s history. It marks the anniversary of the park opening its gates to the public for the first time in 1972 and the creating of unforgettable memories for families to cherish began.

Although roller coasters like the Racer are still speeding up and down the tracks and the Grand Carousel still spins as it did years ago, the park has gone through many changes. When the park opened in 1972, there were just over 60 attractions for the public to enjoy. Now, after 47 years of capital investments in excess of $300 million, there are more than 100 attractions.

In 1972, five themed areas were highlighted. Today there are seven. The employment opportunities have changed dramatically as well. Where it once took 1,300 employees to operate the park on any given day during the season, it now requires approximately 5,000 to keep the 364-acre amusement and water park in operation. The changes have not been limited to the park itself. The area surrounding the park, once farmland, now thrives with commercial and retail businesses, as well as the incredibly increasing population of homes.

Since welcoming its first guests in 1972, an annual visit to Kings Island has become tradition for millions of people. It’s where friendships began, where engagements happen, and where family firsts and milestones are celebrated. It’s fun and thrilling. The place so many Kings Island fans call home.

The Astro-Comet: Remembering King Cobra

In 1984, Kings Island was standing room only as King Cobra made its way into the spotlight of the Adventure Village area of the park. Designed by TOGO, it was the first roller coaster in the world to be designed from the ground up as a stand-up. Other stand-up roller coasters that preceded King Cobra were sit-down models later modified to accommodate stand-up trains, so this made it truly the world’s first.
