I think everyone has a different idea of Halloween “fun.” Some love to run through dark mazes and escape monsters, while I would rather sit back and eat 20 fun-sized candy bars. I’ve never been a fan of haunted houses, so working at Kings Island’s Halloween Haunt for the first time seemed terrifying. That was before I found out that Halloween Haunt features some of the best Halloween-themed shows in Cincinnati. I got the chance to sit in on each of them, and here’s what I found out.
Haunted Homecoming (NEW for 2018)
Where: Showplace Theatre (auditorium behind the Eiffel Tower)
When: Fridays and Saturdays, 8 p.m., 9 p.m., 10:30 p.m., 11:30 p.m.
In the 1980s, Cleaver High School’s performance group mysteriously disappeared, only to emerge on the night of the homecoming dance. Creatures of the night come alive in this all-new Halloween rock-fest featuring classic songs from yesterday and today. If you’ve ever seen Forever Country in Festhaus, this show is very similar. Young performers dance and sing to hits like “Thriller” and “The Time Warp,” but unlike Forever Country this show goes through several big character changes, from devils singing about fire, to mad scientists singing about the terror of love, and the dancing is a little more risqué. This makes it a little more interesting, especially if you enjoy different music genres and more personality in the characters. My favorite part was the hilarious dynamic between the undead students as they argued over girls and other common teenage conflicts.
When: Fridays and Saturdays 8:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m., 11:00 p.m., 12:00 a.m.
This show is a great way to get your adrenaline going without the scary mazes! It’s packed with an explosive, apocalyptic blend of high-energy percussion, music and stunts. Sparks fly (literally) as zombie drummers play percussion to roaring dubstep music, all while fire performers spin flaming sticks and spit giant bursts of fire toward the crowd. Think Ozzy Osbourne concert but with flame throwers.
When: Fridays 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m., 10 p.m., Saturdays 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m.
Monster Rock will let you sit back and remember the glory days. This show probably has the most relaxed pace of all the Haunt entertainment, but it still packs a punch. This classic rock revue features the monster hits of Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and more. Unlike the other two shows, with Monster Rock you can escape the cold while you relax in Festhaus and enjoy warm LaRosa’s or Panda Express. Performers give spooky renditions of all the classics that adults will reminisce on and kids will fall in love with.
Halloween Haunt runs Friday and Saturday nights through October 27. Learn more here.
