Amusement Today’s 21st annual Golden Ticket Awards, honoring the best of the best amusement and theme parks around the world have to offer, took place Saturday night (September 8) in Branson, Missouri with Kings Island taking home one award and a finalist in four other categories.
The sole possessor of the Golden Ticket Award for BEST KIDS’ AREA IN THE WORLD since the category was created in 2001, Kings Island did it again this year for a 18th consecutive win. The elaborate collection of PEANUTS-themed rides and attractions for every age, including four roller coasters specifically designed for children, character meet-and-greets, live shows, gift shop and bright colors has long resonated with voters.
Kings Island had two of its rides ranked among the top 10 on lists: The Beast fifth among wooden roller coasters and Diamondback 10th for steel.
The Beast is one of only two roller coasters that have been on every top 10 list Amusement Today has published since the inception of the Golden Ticket Awards in 1998 (Phoenix at Knoebels Amusement Resort is the other). It's No. 5 ranking this year is the highest the coaster has ever placed.
Mystic Timbers, which received the Golden Ticket for BEST NEW RIDE in 2017, finished just outside the top 10 on the wooden roller coaster chart at No. 11 for the second year in a row.
Halloween Haunt was a finalist for BEST HALLOWEEN EVENT for the first time since 2010, coming in at No. 4 while the return of WinterFest was a huge success, tied at No. 4 on the list for BEST CHRISTMAS EVENT with Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
The annual Golden Ticket Awards are the amusement industry’s equivalent of the Oscars and presented annually to honor the “Best of the Best” in the amusement industry and are calculated from an international poll conducted by Amusement Today. The prestigious survey asks experienced amusement park voters around the country and world to rate the “bests” in 23 categories.
Amusement Today newspaper was founded in 1997 and covers international amusement and water park news and trends. In its 21-year history, it is a five-time winner of various awards from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. Kings Island’s summer season has come to an end, but the Halloween season is just around the corner. The park will be open Fridays through Sundays in the fall starting September 21 when Halloween Haunt begins.
